Hazardous Materials

All firefighters with the City of North Platte Fire Department are trained and equipped to deal with hazardous materials (Hazmat) containment, evacuation and minimization of long-term effects at hazardous material incidents. In addition to minimum training levels, ALL 39 of the departments firefighters are certified to the Hazardous Material Technician-Level. This advanced training allows the Hazmat Team to handle more dangerous and more sophisticated chemical spills in compliance with federal certification requirements and safety regulations.

NPFD’s Regional Response Hazmat Team works in partnership with neighboring agencies as part of the Nebraska State Emergency Response Commission (SERC). Our team is apart of an agreement with the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). NEMA currently has inter‐local agreements with 10 teams/agencies across the state whom that have received specialized training as hazmat technicians. The State Emergency Response Teams (SERT’s) include the cities of Beatrice, Columbus, Grand Island, Hastings, Norfolk, North Platte, Omaha, Scottsbluff and Red Willow Western Rural Fire.
