Fire Department

Welcome to the City of North Platte Fire Department homepage. Our department was founded in 1887, and has a proud tradition of providing top notch fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical services, hazardous materials technician level response, and technical rescue services to the residents, visitors, and passerby’s of North Platte, NE. North Platte is a community of approximately 24,000 residents, and is the county seat for Lincoln County; which has approximately 35,280 residents and covers a total of 2,575 square miles. Yearly, our footprint continues to grow as we respond to assist smaller surrounding communities that are experiencing higher requests for emergency services coupled with a decline in volunteers. We work closely with these agencies through mutual-aid agreements to provide support where we can, all while recognizing our primary responsibility to our local citizens.

I hope as you browse through our department’s webpage; you will find useful information about our fire department, the services we provide, and the community we serve. Currently, we respond 24/7-365 out of three fire stations strategically located throughout our city. The North Platte Fire Department operates three shifts, A-B-C.  Each shift is on duty 24 hours, off duty 24 hours for five shifts and then on day #10 the shift gets 6 full days off. Which equates out to a 56 hour work week for our on-duty shift personnel. Our department is a combination department consisting of 39 paid shift personnel and several volunteer personnel. At present, our career staff includes 18 Advanced Life Support Paramedics, 1 EMT-Intermediate, 1 Advanced-EMT, and 19 Basic Life Support EMT’s. The departments administrative staff consists of the- Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Marshall, Deputy Fire Marshall, Administrative Assistant, Secretary, and one Maintenance Mechanic.

Within the City of North Platte Fire Department, we have a long standing history and tradition of providing high quality, professional service to our beloved community. This service is the result of individuals dedicating themselves selflessly to the service of others. We hope that you never need to call us. But if there is a time that you may have to; know that we strive daily to provide highly trained, efficient, and caring professional firefighters to be at your side when you need them the most!

In 2017 The City of North Platte Fire Department was proud to announce that the Fire Department received the ISO (Insurance Services Office) Class 2 public protection classification. This improvement represents our continued commitment to provide the most effective and efficient services to our community. Out of over 48,000 fire protection areas in the nation, less than 1,400 or 3% have a Class 2 or better ISO Rating.

ISO is a third party independent agency that evaluates the fire department, water department and communications systems. It rates the results on a national scale from one to ten (one being the best and highest). According to ISO, its Public Protection Classification Program (PPC) plays an important role in the underwriting process with insurance companies. Most U.S. insurers report that the PPC information is used in their decision-making process when deciding what business to cover, what coverage’s to offer or prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance. With a communities Class 2 rating, many insurance providers give a discount on annual insurance premiums for residences and businesses.
