The purpose of the Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course is to:

Introduce instructor candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross.


Prepare instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross specialty courses to diverse populations.


Teach instructor candidates the policies and procedures fo the American Red Cross to ensure course consistency, quality and appropriate reporting.

Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow

Ages 11-14

Want to be a lifeguard but not old enough yet to enroll in an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course? Get a jump start on your future as a lifeguard with GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow! By enrolling in the program, you'll experience what it takes to be a great lifeguard. GuardStart teaches you everything from lifesaving and leadership skills to fitness and professional development. When it's time to take a Lifeguarding course, your GuardStart experience will prepare you to be the best lfieguard that you can be.


Youth who participate in the GuardStart program before becoming a lifegaurd are often more dedicated, efficient and knowledgeable than their competition. Plus, as a GuardStart participant, you'll get to know our acquatic staff members and they will be familiar with your skills and performance when the hiring process begins. GuardStart is just the beginning of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. Once you turn 15, the minimum age to be a lifeguard, you can enroll in an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course. Enroll today!

Red Cross Learn-to-Swim!


Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Level 3: Stroke Development
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
Level 6: Swimming & Skill Proficiency


The American Red Cross offers six comprehensive course levels that teach you, your child, or other family members how to swim skillfully and safely. The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the preceding level, except for Level 1, which has no prerequisite. Each level of the Learn-to-Swim included training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress, in addition to the skills outlined below.


Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills


Purpose: Helps students feel comfortable in the water.


Level 1 participants learn to:

  • Enter & exit water safely, using ladder, steps or side
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes underwater, retrieve submerged objects
  • Front & back glides and back float
  • Recover to vertical position from a front glide and back float or glide
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Tread water using arm and hand actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front & back
  • Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front & back
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Staying safe around aquatic environments
  • Recognizing the lifeguards
  • Don't just pack it, wear your jacket
  • Recognizing and emergency
  • How to call for help
  • Too much sun is no fun

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills


Purpose: Gives students success with fundamental skills.


Level 2 participants learn to:

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side
  • Exit water using ladder, steps or side
  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
  • Front and back glides and back floats
  • Recover from a front and back float or glide to a vertical position
  • Roll from front to back & back to front
  • Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Finning arm action on back
  • Staying safe around aquatic environments
  • Don't just pack it, wear your jacket
  • Recognizing and emergency
  • How to call for help
  • Too much sun is no fun
  • Look before you leap
  • So you think you don't sink
  • Reach or throw, don't go

Level 3: Stroke Development


Purpose: Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper waters.


Level 3 participants learn to:

  • Enter water by jumping from the side
  • Headfirst entry from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety
  • Rotary breathing
  • Survival float
  • Back float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front & back
  • Tread water
  • Push off in streamlined position then begin flutter and dolphin kicks on front
  • Front crawl and elementary backstroke
  • Scissors kick
  • Reach or throw, don't go
  • Think twice before going near cold water or ice
  • Look before you leap

Level 4: Stroke Improvement


Purpose: Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills.


Level 4 participants learn to:

  • Headfirst entryfrom the side in compact or stride position
  • Swim underwater
  • Feet first surface dive
  • Survival swimming
  • Front crawl and backstroke open turns
  • Tread water using two different kicks
  • Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke & butterfly
  • Push off in a streamlined position then begin flutter and dolphin kicks on back
  • Reach or throw, don't go
  • Recreation water illnesses
  • Think, don't sink
  • Look before you leap

Level 5: Stroke Refinement


Purpose: Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.


Level 5 participants learn to:

  • Shallow-angle dive from the side
  • Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke
  • Tuck and pike surface dives
  • Front flip turn and backstroke turn while swimming
  • Tread water
  • Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breatstroke, sidestroke & butterfly
  • Standard scull
  • How to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid & CPR
  • Recreational water illnesses
  • Reach or throw, don't go
  • Look before you leap
  • Think so you don't sink
  • Think twice before going near cold water or ice
  • Wave, tide or ride, follow the guide

Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency


Purpose: Level 6 is designed to prepare participants for lifetime fitness and safety, as well as more advanced courses, such as the Water Safety Instructor course, or other aquatic activities, including competitive swimming.


ALL RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES ARE OFFERED ON A YEAR ROUND BASIS AT THE RECREATION COMPLEX.

Program Registration Information

  1. Registration for all programs is accepted on a "first come, first served" basis until the maximum enrollment established for each class is reached.
  2. All registration fees MUST BE PAID AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION, unless otherwise noted (class waiting lists will not pay registration fee when registering.)
  3. Telephone registrations will be accepted with Mastercard and Visa payment ONLY!
  4. Walk-in registrations will receive priority over mail-in registrations.

Class Waiting Lists

*If a class is filled, you may be placed on a waiting list and if other classes open up or if students transfer or drop out, you will be called. If you do not receive a call, please ATTEMPT TO REGISTER FOR ANOTHER CLASS OR SESSION as you will NOT be automatically placed in the next session.


Cancellations

Nothing cancels a program quicker than someone waiting until the last minute to register for it! At some point we have to determine if our enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. If you wait to sign up until the first class, the program may already be cancelled due to low enrollment. It is important to sign up prior to the registration deadline noted on the program.

Refund requests for class activities must be accompanied by a receipt and written request stating reason for refund. NO REFUNDS will be allowed during the second class.
